Understanding Bodywork and its Significance
Many clients often share their feelings after bodywork treatments. They say they feel good but also somewhat indulgent. This sentiment often hides a feeling of guilt, as if they are partaking in something that is a privilege and a guilty pleasure. However, I firmly believe that healing touch is fundamental to good health and should be accessible to everyone.
In India, the birthplace of Ayurveda, massage and bodywork are commonplace. Despite the mixed levels of privilege, you’ll find street vendors offering head massages and Ayurvedic Pancha Karma centers with extensive menus of bodywork treatments. In traditional families, intergenerational massage remains a practice, where mothers, daughters, and grandmothers give each other head, face, or foot massages. Men often hold hands and embrace each other openly, a practice that shows how deeply intertwined touch is in daily life.
The Science Behind Touch
Touch is more than just a physical sensation; it’s a complex biochemical, electrical, and magnetic phenomenon. It carries information about our external world and reveals the intentions of others—whether those intentions are loving, threatening, or somewhere in between. The nuances of touch can convey comfort and care. For instance, holding someone’s hand offers reassurance, while a sudden grab of an arm can evoke fear.
Trust plays a pivotal role in how we perceive touch. It differs greatly between a trusted friend and a stranger. This difference is why society has established barriers and rules to ensure our safety and well-being. We must recognize the importance of trust to engage in successful and healing bodywork.
The Role of Touch in Nervous System Health
Touch communicates information, but it can also transform our nervous system. In today’s fast-paced world, we often need to reset and restore our nervous system. I see touch as a primary tool for achieving this. A good massage signals that our body has shifted into parasympathetic mode, allowing us to heal, renew, and restore.
When parasympathetic responses dominate our autonomic nervous system, we can move away from survival mode and evolve. Although it may not provide an immediate fix, touch can help us break free from stuck emotional states and guide us toward clarity and peace.
Loving or healing touch, referred to as 'Abhyanga' in Ayurveda, has remarkable effects on our endocrine system. It can increase levels of:
Oxytocin: This hormone fosters feelings of love and safety, grounding us emotionally.
Serotonin: It alleviates anxiety and depression, helping us feel content.
Dopamine: This hormone brings pleasure and motivation, helping us combat burnout.
Cortisol: Touch decreases this long-range stress hormone, aiding recovery from physical illnesses and reducing stress-related health issues.
The Ayurvedic Perspective on Touch
According to Ayurvedic teachings, soft connective tissues like fascia and collagen are extensions of the majja dhatu and the subconscious mind. Unprocessed emotions can accumulate in these tissues and create stress. Known as ama, these undigested substances can lead to discomfort.
Sparsha chikitsa, or healing touch, plays a crucial role in breaking down emotional stress stored in connective tissues. It detoxifies the body and mind while repairing and rejuvenating tissues. When we release long-held emotions, we often experience a newfound sense of liberation.

Much of Ayurvedic bodywork focuses on reducing systemic vata, particularly in our current fast-paced environment. However, Ayurveda also acknowledges the need for individual preferences in touch. Some require gentle, warm movements to calm their nervous systems, while others may benefit from moderate, cooling touch or firmer techniques aimed at deeper tissues. Identifying individual needs is crucial for effective treatment.
The Essence of Healing Touch
Ultimately, the secret to effective healing touch lies in the practitioner’s intention. It’s essential that the recipient's wellness is at the forefront of the treatment. Thoughts, feelings, and actions must be aimed at promoting positivity and healing. Often, mantras are chanted during a bodywork session to invoke and amplify positive vibrations.
Feeling good after bodywork shouldn’t be viewed as mere indulgence. It embodies health, care, renewal, and rejuvenation. Healing touch grants us ojas, a Sanskrit term that conveys contentment, immunity, and resilience. Our innate ability to feel touch significantly impacts our well-being and influences our relationships with others and the world around us.
As we explore the significance of healing touch, I encourage all beings to embrace and share this power of health-giving contact.
