Nasal therapies involve the application of oils, herbs, or other substances into the nasal passages to clear nasal passages, support the flow of prana, improve expectoration or remove doshas in the head area. The nose is essential for breathing and also plays a critical role in filtering air, regulating temperature, and supporting the immune system. When nasal passages are clear and healthy, we oxygenate our bodies better and therefore have more energy, clearer thinking and even improved sleep quality.
Some common nasal therapies include neti (nasal irrigation), steam inhalation, and Ayurvedic nasya therapy. These methods help remove toxins, reduce inflammation, and enhance the flow of energy or prana in the body. For example, nasal irrigation with saline solution can relieve congestion and prevent sinus infections. Meanwhile, nasya therapy uses medicated oils to nourish the nasal mucosa and improve neurological function.
Ayurvedic nasya can either be performed in a clinical setting as part of Pancha Karma (the Ayurvedic detox protocol), or a simplified version can easily be self-administered at home. The medicine, timing, protocol and dose needs to be adjusted according to the individual and their condition.

The Science Behind Nasal Therapies and Their Benefits
Scientific research supports many of the claims made about nasal therapies. The nasal cavity is rich in blood vessels and nerve endings, making it an effective route for delivering therapeutic substances directly to the brain and respiratory system. Often the eyes are poetically described as, 'the windows to the soul', here we could say the nose is the passage to the brain! The unique positioning of the olfactory nerve allows nasal therapies to potentially have a powerful, direct effect on the brain.
For instance, studies have shown that nasal irrigation (neti) can reduce symptoms of allergic rhinitis and chronic sinusitis. It helps flush out allergens, bacteria, and mucus, reducing inflammation and promoting healing. During a heavy cold, steam inhalation can be an excellent treatment to loosen mucus and improve airflow, making breathing easier and improving recovery time.
Nasya therapy, a traditional Ayurvedic practice, has been found to improve cognitive function and reduce stress. The oils used in nasya contain compounds that may have anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective effects. These oils help lubricate the nasal passages, support the nervous system, and balance the doshas (body energies) according to Ayurveda.
How Often Should You Do Nasya?
The frequency of nasya therapy depends on individual health needs, lifestyle, and the specific oils used. Generally, nasya can be performed daily or several times a week for maintenance and prevention. For acute conditions like sinus congestion or headaches, more frequent sessions may be recommended under professional guidance.
Here are some practical guidelines for nasya frequency:
Daily Use: For general wellness and to maintain clear nasal passages, applying nasya oil once a day, preferably in the morning, is beneficial.
During Illness: When experiencing sinus congestion, headaches, or stress, nasya can be done twice daily until symptoms improve.
Seasonal Changes: Increase the frequency during seasonal transitions to prevent hayfever, allergies and respiratory issues.
Professional Advice: Always consult an Ayurvedic practitioner or healthcare provider to tailor the frequency and type of nasya to your specific needs.
Consistency is key to experiencing the full benefits of nasya therapy. It is a gentle practice that can be easily integrated into your daily self-care routine.

Practical Tips for Incorporating Nasal Therapies into Your Routine
Nasya is a simple method to add to your daily routine (dinacharya). Here are some actionable steps to get started:
Steam Inhalation: Boil water and inhale the steam for 5-10 minutes. Adding a few drops eucalyptus or peppermint oil can enhance the clarifying/clearing effect.
Give Yourself a Head and Face Massage: A few minutes of vigorous massage of the scalp and face with a small amount of oil can feel quite uplifting, and also enhances the effects of the nasya.
Use Warm Compresses on the Face: A simple warm to hot flannel over the sinus areas (either sides of the nose and on the brow line) of the face improves the efficacy of oil distribution by encouraging vasodilation.
Explore Nasya Therapy: You can either purchase high-quality medicated oil and follow instructions carefully or use cold-pressed black sesame oil (best for vata dry conditions), or coconut oil or ghee (these are better for pitta conditions or in the warmer seasons). Begin with applying one drop on your little finger and rubbing it several times around the inside of each nostril. Inhale afterward and gently massage upward along the sides and front of the nose toward the forehead. If one drop is well tolerated, you can try 2-3 drops per nostril.
Be Patient!
Nasya is an easy add to your daily routine. As with most traditional therapies, nasya takes time to have full effect, so be patient and stick at it. You may note immediate benefits with feeling clearer respiratory passages, releasing 'stuck' mucous, or relieving dryness. It is excellent for all of these symptoms and can be done safely with a plain oil on a daily basis.
For more serious or chronic conditions, please check first with your Doctor, and see a practitioner for advice about performing nasya therapy.
Start small, be consistent, and tune into your body’s responses.
